And The Winners are .........!!

Breaking News....Breaking News....Breaking News....Breaking News

Torrential Torrid Rugby 10s Final

In horrendous muddy and wet conditions an epic final was fought out on a field more reminiscent of the Somme rather than a field on a tropical island between close rivals the Roosters from South Africa and the Moorabbin Rams from Australia who are celebrating their 10th anniversary trip to the 10s and also 10 years since their only cup victory in the tournament. In a bruising encounter it was all square going into the final quarter when an incident off the ball was to prove the turning point in the game. During a phase of play one of the roosters was taken out unsighted by the referee. Play continued on for a couple of minutes culminating in a Rams try. After the intervention by the linesman a Rams player was sin binned but the ref ruled that the incident didnt interfere with play so the score stood and tis was to prove the only score of the game with the Rams winning 5-0 !!

Its Finals Day at the Phuket Heineken International Rugby 10s

Well on day two where the young studs with the odd old lag making up numbers were finally able to strut their stuff the weather stayed fine for most of the day although the odd hairdo did get mucky in the mud. Although the conditions were at times more suited to water polo than rugby the quality of play throughout was outstanding and once again as the short game was better suited for the mud and the big bruisers of the pack came into their own with some tremendous hits close around the ruck area and exceptional ball skills. There were glimpses of brilliance in the back line too where despite the worry of how the hair was looking due to lack of hair dryers, many tries were scored though open running rugby and slick handling.

Contenders for the Plate Quarter finals are

Hong Kong Raiders v Phuket Vagabonds
Singapore Bucks v YCAC
Bangkok Bangers Colts v Melanins
Bedock Kings v Taipei Baboons

In the Cup competition it will be a tense day with the Roosters looking to win the cup for the 2nd time in three years and the Moorabbin Rams from Melbourne Australia looking to take out an unprecedented 3 titles over the weekend

Contenders for the cup quarter finals are
Roosters v Pattaya Panthers
Thai legends v Melbourne Lambs
Melbourne Rams v Al Ain Amblers
Emirates Flying Muppets v Singapore Wanderers
Losers of the plate will drop down into the Bowl competition and the losers in the cup will drop down to join the Plate competition

Tour Virgin Beauty Pageant 2012

In what was a closely fought contest the annual Tour Virgin Beauty pageant was held at the Taipan Disco in Patong Beach.
Ezmeralda Muppet will never be remembered as a runner up
In one of the most popular decisions ever seen in the competition the Melbourne Rams finally won the prestigious event after many years of heart ache. As the contestants were whittled down to the last two it was between Esmeralda from the Flying Muppets and Bruce from the Rams it took two count backs to separate the two. In the end as being men we couldn't come up with decisive winner a REAL women was chosen from the audience to chose the winner and after another romp around the stage to the cheers cat calls and howls of laughter from the assembled audience it was finally decided that the Melbourne Rams were the winners.
Rams Contestants

An added incentive for the contestants at this years show was the winners being selected to compete in Miss Drag Queen 2012

Thanks to Bob and all the staff at Taipan for hosting the event

A full report of the whole weekend rugby and social will be out later in the week when I recover !!

Torrential Rain at the Phuket Heineken Rugby 10's

Torrential downpours and high winds failed to dampen the spirits of the coffin dodgers competitors on day one of the Phuket Heineken Rugby 10s 2012. The island has been awash with monsoon rains for the last 6 weeks but the pitch was holding up well under the conditions and the players reveled in the mud with the forwards coming to the fore and the Nancy backs getting their hair dirty and the makeup wet. High light of the day was The Phuket Viagrabonds beating the Old Bangkok Bangers 19-0 to retain the Weasel cup !!

The Moorabbin Rams
(AKA The Wizards of Oz)

The Moorabbin Rams
         (AKA The Wizards of Oz)

10 is the magic number. 10 years at the 10s. It has a perfect symmetry to it.
The Moorabbin Rams from Melbourne are on a mission. And there isn't a cowardly lion in sight.
Our biggest ever touring party, predominately based in Oz but with players flying in from all over the world, is hugely looking forward to the Phuket 10s once again.

We are determined to match our on-field skills with our superior off-field prowess of mascot smuggling, mammoth court sessions and supporting the local economy – by walking away with some silverware.

We are pleased to be supporting the schools initiative that this magnificent tournament continues to do great work for, and we are looking forward to meeting old friends and making many new ones.

Led by the evergreens Gazza and Arv, we will be following the Amber Nectar Brick Road over the course of the weekend.
Just don't pull back the curtain in the massage parlour, you might be a little horrified...

FORWARDS

And then there were those who mattered !!

It is largely unknown to players and followers of the modern game that rugby started off purely as a contest for forwards in opposition in line-outs, scrums, rucks and mauls. This pitted eight men of statuesque physique, supreme fitness and superior intelligence in packs against one another.

In those days, the winner was the pack that won the most set pieces. The debasement of the game began when backs were introduced. This occurred because a major problem was where to locate the next scrum or line-out. Selecting positions on the ground for these had become a constant source of friction and even violence.

The problem was resolved by employing forward rejects, men of small stature and limited intelligence, to run aimlessly around within the field of play.

Following a set piece, the ball would be thrown to one of them, who would establish the next location either by dropping it or by throwing it to another reject for dropping. Very occasionally, a third reject would receive the ball before it would be dropped, and crowds would wildly cheer on these rare occasions. Initially these additional players were entirely disorganized but with the passing of time they adopted set positions.

For instance, take the half-back. He was usually one of the smallest and least intelligent of the backs whose role was simply to accept the ball from a forward and to pass it on to one of the other rejects who would drop it, providing the new location for the forwards to compete. He could easily (given his general size) have been called a quarter forward or a ball monkey but then tolerance and compassion are the keys to forward play and the present euphemism was decided on.

The five-eighth plays next to the half-back and his role is essentially the same except that when pressured, he usually panics and kicks the ball.

Normally, he is somewhat taller and slightly better built than the half-back and hence his name. One-eighth less and he would have been a half-back, three-eighths more and he might well have qualified to become a forward.

The centres were opportunists who had no expertise but wanted to share in the glamour associated with forward packs. After repeated supplication to the forwards for a role in the game they would be told to get out in the middle of the field and wait for instructions. Thus, when asked where they played, they would reply "in the centre". And they remain to this day, parasites and scroungers who mostly work as lawyers or used car dealers.

You may ask, why wingers? The answer is simple. Because these were players who had very little ability and were the lowest in the backline pecking order, they were placed as far away from the ball as possible. Consequently, and because the inside backs were so diligent in their assigned role of dropping the ball whenever they received it, the main contribution to the game made by the winger was not to get involved. Their instructions were to run away as quickly as possible whenever trouble appeared, and to avoid tackles at all costs. The fact that the game was organised so that the wingers didn't get to touch the ball led to an incessant flow of complaints from them and eventually the apt description "whingers" was applied. Even though the "h" dropped off over the years, the whingeing itself unfortunately has not.

Girly Backs !!
Lastly, the full-back. This was the position given to the worst handler, the person least able to accept or pass the ball, someone who was always in the way. The name arose because the forwards would understandably become infuriated by the poor play invariably demonstrated by that person, and call out "send that fool back". He would then be relegated well out of everyone's way to the rear of the field.

So there you have it. Let's return to the glory days of a contest between two packs of eight men of statuesque physique, supreme fitness and superior intelligence. The rest can go off to where they will be happier, playing soccer.

Main Tournament - INSEAD RFC - Singapore

 INSEAD Rugby Football Club

"The INSEAD Rugby Football Club (IRFC) brings together MBA participants from over a dozen countries who all share a passion for liquid gold and running into semi-solid objects. Since its inception in 1972, the IRFC has prided itself on inclusiveness, and consistently brings 15-30 Barbarians and 10-40 Ladyboys (depending on the post-match festivities) on rugby tours across the globe. Having maintained a state of undefeatedness for 269 consecutive outings, IRFC players continue to capture the interest of onlookers both on and off the pitch."

Main Tournament - Pattaya Panthers - Thailand

PATTAYA PANTHERS

Fresh from their sterling performance in The Amari Orchid Pattaya Chris Kays Memorial 10’s, which was held strangely enough at our home ground the Horseshoe Point Resort, the Panthers are looking to make their mark on other tournaments across the country. Following the FRENCH REVOLUTION we now have a cadre of French speakers, who enjoy not only their rugby but a good party!!!! So with their now famous pink tails held high in the air the Panthers have set their sights on creating a stir in Phuket not only in the rugby stadium at The Kata Group Sports Ground but also along Soi Bangla!!! Apart from the French contingent we have a polyglot group of party lovers led by Coach Des Halls, who is a wily old fox and will certainly ensure that the team enjoy themselves. Also our world famous DJ “ Robbie Luurve”, who is a rugby whore and will play with anybody!!! The Pattaya Panthers have also discovered youth and several of our players are still young enough to appreciate Lady Gaga so the Katoeys on Soi Bangla had better watch out for the Mighty Boner and Bryan ( “ I do love myself “ ) De Leon and it will be hard to miss our South African brothers B1 and B2 as well as our indomitable leader Capitaine Adrien and his cohorts Maxim, Pierre, Olivier and Guy. The Panthers haven’t been in Pattaya for 5 years, now so this is a return that we hope will end in victory!!! Many thanks to Pat Cotter and his organizing team, who have fitted us in at the last minute wishing the tournament and of course the Panthers every success.

Main Tournament - Al Ain Amblers - UAE

 Al Ain Amblers

"The Al Ain Amblers are nothing short of exciting to watch.  Don’t get caught standing still in awe of the ball-handling brilliance because the Amblers are merciless with devastating hits and a tireless, lightning pace.  Once again the Amblers will land in Thailand with players that originate from rugby union’s best countries.  The Amblers currently have players from New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Samoa, Fiji, Wales and England. This year the Amblers battled in UAE Premiership and the Gulf Conference where they established themselves as one of the most feared and well respected teams in the Gulf and went unbeaten in all games. The Amblers are traveling to Phuket with its strongest team yet and they won’t be satisfied with anything less than total dominance and ultimate victory.

We would like to say that the last half decade of Phuket tours have been an unforgettable experience but the truth is that the memories are actually a bit foggy, one thing is for certain, whatever happens on the pitch, we WILL win the party! Good luck to everyone at the 2012 Phuket rugby tournament."

Main Tournament - Wanderers RFC - Singapore - Coffin Dodgers comp - Wanderers Wrinkleys - Singapore

Wanderers RFC
say
Lets get Loooooooooooose at the 2012 Phuket Heineken 10’s

The intrepid touring members of the WanderersRFC from Singapore once again head to the sunny climes of Phuket to do battle with other clubs and the odd conscious as well.
With our now familiar catchcry of “Lets get Looooooooooooose” and an touring strategy of “Shock ‘n’ Awe followed by Hearts ‘n’ Minds” we are well placed to have a great time on and off the field
A smaller squad compared to past years with a small contingent of  “Supporters”  whom we will probably lose the first night to the dark side, we still aim to be the competitive and chivalrous none the less.
With the vigour of youth we have been preparing long and hard for this campaign, with a healthy diet, regular sleep and vitamin suppliments and we have spurned the  regular taunts of the Wrinklies and have rejected their training methods as obsolete and ineffective.
We look forward to the kick off and dread the final whistle the same way we look forward to Rhino’s 1 hour pre-game team talks and dread the thought of going into town to drink with the Wrinklies.
A word of warning to all club mascots, be prepared to be captured and held for ransom, with all ransom money collected going to charity.

One of our biggest Wrinklies touring squad of recent years and a small contingent of  “Supporters”  we still aim with our colostomy bags, walking sticks and zimmer frames to be the loudest and most dedicated club in attendance.
We have been preparing long and hard for this campaign, with regular trainings at the Pub and various night spot around Singapore.  Our finely tuned athletes putting their body on the line for the club with regular team Binges that leave no man standing and wives and girlfriends fuming
Of Special mention are Christian “Schmolly” Schmollinger, now on his 7th consecutive tour, and Patrick “El Prez” Knight who has achieved 9 tours and would have had his 10th except his missus made him go to his Brother-in-Laws wedding last year instead of which he still quite hasn’t forgiven her .

We all dread the lick-off and embrace the full time whistle and are really only there trying to recapture the glory of our youth before the onset of dementia and adult diapers.
Looking forward to having a great time on and off the pitch.

Looking Back At Ten Years On Phuket…

A decade has passed since I wrote my first ever project proposal was written and presented.  It was a humble start amongst corrugated iron shacks, dirty water puddles and broken glass in Soi Namsea, (Soi Dirty water) in Patong. Teaching English to food vendors made us aware of the need amongst young children living in the slum area, many times cared for by a brother or sister not much older than themselves.
Patong Childcare Center started in 2002 and provided care for 24 children-at-risk.  Today the Center operates from Kathu and 65 kids from Patong and Kathu are cared for in a safe and friendly educational environment, all free of charge. Asia Center Foundation has been able to grow and develop with the help of many.  Start-up costs as well as continuous support from the World Children’s Fund (WCF) has further helped us to manage a Learning Center for 35 Burmese students in 2008 as well as a long term full care project for 10 children at Baan Sii Som (the Orange House).  WCF is until today a valued project partner amongst a handful of individuals that through the years, has proven their dedication to help ACF in the enormous task of creating education opportunities for disadvantaged children.

During 2004 we also met with the Queen of Thailand and two children from the slum area were able to see their Queen face to face. Our first connection with the International Rugby Tens competition was also in 2004 when Patrick Cotter asked us if we would like to sell raffle tickets during the event.
Once again a humble start that has grown into an event that contributes the biggest part of the support required for sponsoring 100 students in Primary and Secondary school year after year. Rugby support carries our Scholarship Program since 2005, when it officially started after the tsunami.  Various teams from around the world have supported one or more children on the program during the past 7 years.  A lot of effort goes into raising the necessary funds by participating team members and we applaud them for it!
Sponsor teams and sponsored children got to know each other each year during the past events. Complete strangers that invest in their futures through supporting the ACF Scholarship Program touch both children and families. So we consider each rugby player and each team our project partners and want to thank each of you for your involvement in the tournament as well as for your fantastic support over the years.

And finally, during 2009 another dream was realized: starting a Youth Rugby Development Program to introduce Thai children to the game of rugby. Today the Phuket Loma Youth Rugby Club has been registered and players have received great opportunities through the combined efforts of Phuket Rugby, their coaches and volunteers, and ACF’s Youth Development Program. This included a trip to Manchester in 2011 and recently, the first of 3 Bob Dwyer rugby coaching clinics on Phuket, held at Thanyapura Sports and Leisure complex.  They might be small in stature, but they have hearts of lions!  “They” are the students in primary schools in which ACF work and whom jumped at the challenge to play rugby.  Watch out Phuket Loma Seniors!
The rugby community is full of initiative when it comes to a good cause. This was proven once more when members of the Bangkok Bangers got on their bikes in Bangkok and cycled all the way to Phuket for charity in 2010. And that was just the start!  They have repeated this enormous adventure for three years in a row, raising close to B800 000.
As we look back at the past ten years, we recognize that there was lots of growth and development for Asia Center Foundation.  We also recognize that it didn’t happen by the hands of any one person in particular. It was a combined effort from many different people that helped grow ACF to where we are today. We thank you for seeing the bigger picture with us, and for making your time, money, skills and humor available to become an active part of that bigger picture. And for helping us to change lives and to give hope so poor children can have better futures.

In October 2012, ACF celebrates the past 10 years officially with a Fund Raising Dinner event at one of the Kata Group hotels.  Tickets for the event will be available from August onwards.  Should you wish to attend please do contact us and if you have something you would like to donate that we will be able to auction off we would love to hear from you.
To the teams: Enjoy the Tens and we look forward for you to meet up with your sponsor child/ren at the photo booth for more “official” pictures this year.
To Patrick, thank you for turning your event into something that benefits others, especially those as vulnerable as children, as well as for your initiative towards and contribution to Youth Rugby Development the past 3 years.   We salute you!

Roelien Muller
Director
